select2 plugin - add "not found" item to list.

I have seen various methods of adding a not found item to the list--all of them seemingly in the call to the select2 plugin.

I would like to know how I can do it in the Datatables plug-in itself, so that it applies to all instances of select2. I do not have much/any experience doing this, so I would need some guidance.
